We recognize the great importance of family, friends and other loved ones paying visits to our patients. These visits are extremely important in keeping our patients' spirits up and bringing smiles to their faces. While we encourage visitors, we do have several guidelines we ask you to follow.
Parents are considered primary care partners and are welcome to come and go as needed. One adult family member is encouraged to sleep in the room with the child.
• Visitors are welcome at any time during the patient’s stay.
• Visitors are also welcome to stay with a family member or friend when they are in the
hospital’s Emergency Department, or are here for outpatient services or Ambulatory Surgery.
• Parents/guardians can choose who can and cannot visit their children while they are in our
healthcare facility without regard to legal relationship, race, color, national origin, religion,
sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
• Limits on visiting must be reasonable and based on patient’s medical condition, and will be
explained to the parent/guardian and to you.
Visitor restrictions may include, but are not limited to:
• The parent/guardian requests restrictions or limitation
• There are safety concerns, such as infection
• Visiting interferes with the care of the other patients, including the need for their
rest and/or privacy
• An existing court order that restricts contact
• Visitors are disruptive, threatening or violent
• The patient is in a substance abuse/mental/ behavioral health treatment program that
require limited visiting
Visits from children:
• Children are welcome to visit a family member, but those under the age of 16 should be
supervised by a responsible adult during their visit
• Young children are expected to stay with an adult who is responsible for supervising them to
ensure a safe and restful environment for the patient, and any other patient(s) sharing their
• Younger children are not excluded by age, but supervising adults are encouraged to keep
their visit brief.
Contact a patient by phone
To contact a patient in the hospital by phone, you will need the patient's full name. Call Cohen Children's Medical Center at (718 or 516) 470-3000. The operator will connect you to the patient's phone. Please note - a parent can choose to not have this information available, if that is the case the operator will not disclose the patient's phone number.
Operators will not disclose information about a patient's medical status or personal information under any circumstance.

Gifts, Flowers and Balloons
A cuddly stuffed animal, a bunch of balloons or a beautiful bouquet of flowers will brighten the day of any hospitalized child. Gift deliveries from outside vendors are delivered to the patient unit. Visitors may take gifts directly to the patient when visiting.
Mylar (foil type) balloons are allowed in all units and may be purchased in the hospital gift shop in the Lobby Atrium. Latex balloons are not allowed due to allergy and choking hazards.
For health reasons, some units do not allow live plants or cut flowers.
Intensive Care Units: No live flowers are allowed on this unit. A mylar balloon or small stuffed animal is a good option for gifts to patients in this unit. (Flowers delivered to a patient in the Intensive Care Unit will be placed in the Family Lounge.)
Med 4 Hematology/Oncology Unit: No live flowers are allowed on this unit. A mylar balloon is a good option for a gift to patients in this unit. (Flowers delivered to a patient on Med 4 will be placed in the Reception Area.)
