Leading the Way in Pediatric Critical Care

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Cohen Children's Medical Center campus in New Hyde Park is the only PICU on Long Island that provides an on-site attending physician 24 hours a day, 7 days a week . Our 20-bed unit is fully-monitored and provides state-of-the-science critical care for children from infancy to young adulthood. Construction is underway to increase the size of the PICU to 28 beds.

Eleven full-time Pediatric Critical Care Medicine specialists staff the Pediatric Intensive Care Units. Also actively involved are two full-time pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, thirteen cardiologists, two pediatric neurosurgeons and six pediatric surgeons.

This PICU averages 1600 admissions per year and specializes in various levels of pediatric critical care that include:

  • Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
  • Active cardiopulmonary rescue for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome
  • Patients with severe cardiac dysfunction
  • Patients with conditions such as trauma, infection and post-operative instability

In addition, our Manhasset campus has a 14-bed PICU with many of the same programs and services as those listed above. The same specialized pediatric physicians provide coverage at both intensive care units.

Pediatric Transport
Cohen Children Medical Center offers the most extensive and experienced critical care transport teams on Long Island. Our teams have access to the specialty care resources available at the hospital. Each transport is tailored specifically to the individual child who we are transporting, from the physician utilized on the trip, to the equipment taken on the transport.
