Pediatric Cardiac and Heart Surgery

Pediatric cardiac and heart surgery is performed on infants, children and adolescents, as well as adults with congenital heart disease. Highly trained pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons use a variety of cutting-edge surgical techniques to correct a wide spectrum of life-threatening heart defects. In addition, pioneering cardiac surgery is also performed on a baby who is still in the womb. Our Pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons work closely with their patients' pediatric cardiologists and pediatricians to deliver comprehensive cardiac care.

The Pediatric Heart Surgery Division at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center is the largest volume pediatric cardiac surgery division on Long Island, and one of the largest in New York State. We are committed to the very best outcomes in children's heart surgery. A large part of our success and reputation for excellence lies in our combination of innovative technologies, quality care and compassion.

The pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons at Cohen Children's Medical Center perform approximately 300 cardiac and thoracic surgery procedures per year. Our world-renowned surgeons have extensive experience with congenital and acquired heart disease in babies, children and young adults, including some of the rarest heart disorders.

Cohen Children's Medical Center is the only hospital on Long Island with the ability to provide extracorporeal membrane support, which is the use of a special machine to help balance the oxygen level in the blood for longer periods of time. Extracorporeal membrane support is routinely used to care for high-risk pediatric cardiac surgery patients. Throughout the stay, nurses with special interest and training in patients with congenital heart problems provide care and assistance at every level.

Pediatric cardiac and heart surgery therapy is available for patients with congenital heart disease conditions from newborns to adolescents, including:

  • Transposition of the great arteries
  • Ventricular septal defect
  • Atrial septal defect
  • Valve repair
  • Repair of a previous surgery
  • Adult congenital heart disease

Most types of pediatric cardiac and heart surgery require a hospital stay of several days to a week, depending on the surgery needed. Letting your child know how long he or she will be there and who is staying with him or her on which days will help make your child feel more comfortable about staying in a strange place. You are welcome to stay in the hospital with your child. If the hospital is close to home, bringing in additional family members for short visits may also help reduce your child's stress. Be sure to ask your child's doctors what levels of activity and stimulation are acceptable before inviting a large crowd of people into the hospital room.

At our Pediatric Heart Surgery Division, our mission is to ensure that children in our region have access to a center of excellence for cardiac surgical care and that they receive the very best care possible in an environment specially designed for children.
